Auditorium Theatre 2018-19 Issue 2 Pink Boots

2 | AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2018-19 | January 19 - March 3, 2019 Welcome to 2019 at the Auditorium Theatre! We are delighted to have you with us as we continue our 2018-19 Season. This season started off strong in September with the first event in our new National Geographic Live Series —When Women Ruled the World. We celebrated Halloween with Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas , featuring the Chicago Philharmonic with trick-or- treating, a costume contest, and other spooky holiday activities in our historic lobby. We hosted an unforgettable gala evening with Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons ; saw a vibrant performance from Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández that had audiences dancing in the aisles; and honored innovative contemporary dance with Ate9 Dance Company (who performed alongside Glenn Kotche of Wilco ), Deeply Rooted Dance Theater , and Visceral Dance Chicago . This winter, we are thrilled to present Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah for the 14 th consecutive year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King and his vision of a “beloved community.” For the third year, Too Hot will be streamed to correctional facilities around Illinois and to the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, in addition to Too Hot music and poetry residencies hosted at the Cook County Jail and the Illinois Youth Center-Chicago (read more about this community engagement on pages 6-7). On January 24, we welcome the NFL-cheerleader-turned-explorer Mireya Mayor for Pink Boots and a Machete , the second event in our National Geographic Live Series — we look forward to continuing this year’s focus highlighting inspirational women. Our “Made in Chicago” 312 Dance Series continues on February 2 with Trinity Irish Dance Company , making its first Chicago appearance in over a decade with a one-night-only evening of exciting world premieres and classic works. We conclude this homegrown series on March 2 and 3 with Chicago’s own Hubbard Street Dance Chicago , joined by Cuba’s Malpaso Dance Company in an evening that showcases cross-cultural collaboration. Hubbard Street will perform a work by Malpaso Artistic Director Osnel Delgado , while Malpaso will perform a world-premiere piece commissioned by the Auditorium and created by Chicago choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams . The best way to see all we have to offer at the Auditorium Theatre is to join us as a Subscriber.
