David Hattner is a great conductor and a terrific educator and
motivator for the young generation in Portland. During his
tenure at the PYP I have seen the orchestra grow artistically
to new heights. David is very passionate about his work, he is
thorough with the youngsters, encouraging with all of them,
and he has a wonderful sense of what the young musicians
need, both program-wise and during rehearsal and concert.

DAVIDHATTNER
is thefifthMusicDirector in the90-year historyof thePortlandYouth
Philharmonic and the first to be born in America. During the 2012-2013 season, he
conducted three programs with the Oregon Symphony, after making his conducting
debut there in 2011, and also served as cover conductor. Mr. Hattner’s other recent
local appearances were with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, University of Oregon
Symphony, Oregon State University Wind Ensemble and Portland’s FearNoMusic.
He has appeared as guest conductor with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra,
Interlochen Philharmonic, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Sospeso.
In 2007 he conducted live performances of Jason Staczek’s score to Guy Maddin’s
silent film
Brand Upon the Brain
in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland and São
Paulo, Brazil. David Hattner was invited to participate in the American Academy
of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival in 2003, 2005 and 2006, studying with
David Zinman, Murry Sidlin and others. He is an honors graduate in clarinet of
Northwestern University, where he studied with the late Robert Marcellus. He has
served as Principal Clarinetist of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey
Opera Theater and Cascade Festival of Music, and also played with the Orpheus
Chamber Orchestra, the Oregon, American and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras
and the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
