To portray Butterfly and Pinkerton, we have two remarkable
soprano-tenor couples: the debuting Amanda Echalaz and
James Valenti, then Patricia Racette (reprising the role she
sang in our previous revival) and Stefano Secco in his debut.
Wagner’s Parsifal will be given a magnificent new production
by a debuting team, director John Caird and designer Johan
Engels. They’re approaching this piece as storytellers, rather than
using the opera as an allegory to tell a different story. The designs
are spectacular, but in a very aesthetically pure way, creating a
spatial world for the characters to come to life, but at the same
time with no shortage of spectacle! Under the baton of our world-
renowned music director, Sir Andrew Davis (leading an opera
he adores), we’ll present Paul Groves’s first Parsifal and Thomas
Hampson in his celebrated portrayal of Amfortas. Joining them
will be two debuting artists – the
dazzling Daveda Karanas as
Kundry; and one of the true elite
among Wagner singers today,
Kwangchul Youn, as Gurnemanz.
It’s surprisingly rare that
one finds a production of
Verdi’s La traviata staged by
a female director, which will
be the case at Lyric with the
brilliant Arin Arbus making
her Lyric debut. Her task is to
give a 21st-century audience,
with contemporary sensibilities
regarding women’s role in society, an acceptable and powerful
way to interpret the story of the courtesan Violetta. There
have been countless attempts to update this piece; in a way,
the most radical approach is to give it a specific period setting,
which we’ll be doing at Lyric. It will be exciting to present the
Chicago debut of Marina Rebeka, young but already attracting
extraordinary attention at the Met and all over Europe.
She’ll be joined by two artists born to sing this opera, Joseph
Calleja and Quinn Kelsey. Massimo Zanetti conducts Traviata
frequently in major international houses, and his return to
Lyric will ensure that the music will be gloriously served.
Be sure to check out our new “Spotlights” section in this
magazine. I hope you’re having a wonderful summer, and I look
forward to seeing you often at Lyric during the coming season!
Lyric staff and artists celebrate the (almost) end of season in April.
