STILE ANTICO Stile Antico is firmly established as one of the world’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Working without a conductor, its 12 members have thrilled audiences on four conti- nents with their fresh and vibrant performances of Renaissance polyphony. Its numerous record- ings for Harmonia Mundi have earned accolades including the Gramophone Award for Early Mu- sic, the Diapason Gold Award of the Year, the Edison Award, and the German Record Critics’ Prize. The group has also received three Gram- my nominations and performed live at the 60th Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden. Stile Antico has appeared at many of at Europe’s most important venues, including London’s Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertbebouw, France’s Palais des Beaux-Arts and Cité de la Mu- sique, Luxembourg’s Philharmonie, and Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, and is regularly featured at such prestigious festivals as the BBC Proms, Lucerne Easter Festival, and the Antwerp, Utrecht, and York Early Music Festivals. The group has reg- ularly toured the US and Canada since its North American debut in 2009 at the Boston Early Mu- sic Festival, including for performances at the National Cathedral and Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and has appeared at the Cer- vantino Festival in Mexico. Stile Antico recently gave its debut South American performances in Colombia, and over the past year has made its first visits to Hong Kong, Macau, and South Korea. Stile Antico’s members rehearse and per- form as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical results. Supplement- ing its core repertoire, the group has premiered works by John McCabe, Huw Watkins, and most recently Nico Muhly—who wrote Gentle Sleep to commemorate the ensemble’s 10th anniver- sary—and has collaborated with such diverse artists as Fretwork, the Folger Consort, Marino Fomenti, B’Rock, and Sting. In addition to reg- ularly leading courses at the Dartington Interna- tional Summer School, Stile Antico has been in residence at Zenobia Música, is often invited to work alongside ensembles at universities, festi- vals, and early music forums, and continues to expand its work with younger people thanks to the support of the Stile Antico Foundation. Stile Antico is making its Ravinia debut. RAVINIA MAGAZINE | JUNE 17 – JUNE 23, 2019 92
