Ravinia 2023 Issue 6
CAROUSEL STAGE 5:00 PM SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2023 Metro and smartbar’s QUEEN! featuring resident DJs DERRICK CARTER MICHAEL SERAFINI GARRETT DAVID plus resident hosts LUCY STOOLE NICO Smartbar sweethearts and musical con- tortionists Derrick Carter, Michael Ser- afini, and Garrett David serve up an eve- ning of only the rawest Chicago house music. Your Queen! hosts are as stellar and stunning as ever—the renowned but never replicated Lucy Stoole and Nico take center stage, poised to steal the show, per usual. Bask in the atmo- spheric vibrations, dance till you drop, and celebrate one of the best parties to come out of the city: Queen! is one of Chicago’s greatest house institutions. The 21+ party happens every Sunday at smartbar and features house and dance music, plus plenty of over-the-top kings and queens and everything in between. Derrick Carter is widely acknowledged as one of the better DJs of the world. With innovative produc- tions, flawless techni- cal skills, and an ef- fortlessly joyful attitude of rocking a crowd, his influence has infiltrated throughout the spectrum of dance music. Although known as one of the key players of Chicago’s house music wave in the ’90s, Carter began DJing at the age of 9, spinning disco and funk re- cords at family reunions. He freely travels outside standard club tastes, incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz, new wave, and whatever else catches his fancy. Michael Serafini first got his start in Chi- cago nightlife in the ’80s, working for Ber- lin nightclub as a video jockey and remixer. Under the mentorship of close friends Terri Bristol and Ralphi Rosa- rio, Serafini began DJing regularly in the early ’90s. Shortly after, he took up a position at one of Chicago house’s most famous institutions, Gramaphone Records. As his experience grew, so did his reputation, later landing a residency at Boom Boom Room, then the city’s longest running and well known house night. In 2007, Serafini took over ownership of Gramaphone Records, which he still operates today. Garrett David has spent the past decade developing his unmis- takable style and abil- ity to hypnotize the dancefloor through the mentorship of Chez Damier and studying behind the desk at Gramaphone Records. His meticulous approach and underground attitude shines through his production, releasing lush and skittery tunes on prestigious labels such as Courtesy of Balance, Smallville, Residual, and his own imprint, Global Swing. Lucy Stoole , Chicago’s Black Bearded Beauty, is a Windy City–based drag performer, artist, and activist with an in- ternational presence. She’s an Out 100 hon- oree, two-time Drag Queen of the Year, and entrepreneur. Nico is the anti-so- cialite party girl that brings shots and chaotic energy to the room, straight from the runway to the punk show. She’s rough around the edges with a face that’s al- ways blended for the HD. 2:00 PM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2023 Fiesta Ravinia Daylong family festival of Mexican music, food, and culture in celebration of Mexican Independence Day 2:00–2:30 PM & 4:00–4:30 PM, MARTIN THEATRE PLAZA 5:00–5:30 PM, PAVILION GATE PLAZA MARIACHI BRAVO 2:30–3:00 PM & 4:30–5:00 PM, CAROUSEL STAGE MEXICAN FOLKLORIC DANCE COMPANY OF CHICAGO 2:30–5:00 PM, NORTH LAWN LUCHA LIBRE INTERNATIONALE 3:00–5:00 PM, SOUTH LAWN 7:00–7:25 PM, PAVILION DJ CHAVA † 5:30–6:15 PM, SANTA FE TENT SISTEMA RAVINIA ORCHESTRA REIK † † Ravinia debut 7:30 PM, PAVILION RAVINIA MAGAZINE • AUGUST 28 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2023 44
