Ravinia 2025 Issue 2
DIANA KRALL Singer and pianist Diana Krall quickly became immersed in music at her Nanaimo, British Co- lumbia, home, beginning piano lessons at age 4 and eagerly delving into her parents’ record col- lection. By her teens she had begun playing jazz in local restaurants. She attended the Berklee College of Music in the early ’80s before moving to Los Angeles and studying with pianist Jimmy Rowles, who convinced young Krall to give equal focus to her singing. By 1990 she had relocated to New York City, and she released her debut album, Stepping Out , three years later. After 1995’s Only Trust Your Heart , Krall signed with the iconic Impulse! label to release All For You , a Nat “King” Cole Trio tribute album that earned Krall her first Grammy nomination and was on Billboard ’s jazz charts for 70 weeks. Love Scenes followed in 1997 and also earned a Grammy nomination, then in 1999 When I Look in Your Eyes won her the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and was the first jazz album in 25 years to be nominated for Album of the Year. The record was also awarded the Grammy for Best Engineered Album, which was also won by its 2001 follow up, The Look of Love , which saw her collaborate with legendary bossa nova arranger Claus Ogerman. Live in Paris (2003) won Krall her second Grammy, and in 2004 she collaborat- ed with husband Elvis Costello on The Girl in the Other Room , her first album to feature her orig- inal songs. Krall reprised her partnership with Ogerman on 2009’s Quiet Nights , and 2012 saw her team up with T Bone Burnett for Glad Rag Doll . Her 2015 album, Wallflower , produced by 16-time Grammy winner David Foster, featured a selection of pop songs from her childhood that inspired her then and now. On 2017’s Turn Up the Quiet , Krall reunited with her longtime produc- er, Tommy LiPuma, to return to her inimitable take on the Great American Songbook, which has carried through her 2018 duo album with Tony Bennett ( Love Is Here to Stay ) and 2020’s This Dream of You , her latest recording. Diana Krall made her Ravinia debut in 1998 and returns tonight for her eighth season at the festival.
