Ravinia 2025 Issue 3

Dan Tyminski was 6 years old when his parents began taking him to fiddle contests, square dances, and bluegrass festivals across New En- gland, setting the foundations for his 30+ year career making a mark in every corner of contemporary music and modern-day bluegrass. His voice famously accompanies George Clooney’s performance of the Stan- ley Brothers’ classic song “I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? , and his vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed more than a billion times to date. His diverse solo projects and years of work with Alison Krauss & Union Station have yielded troves of award-winning music, most recently earning a Grammy nomination for his latest album, Dan Tyminski: Live From The Ryman . His earliest touring and recording work was with Green Mountain Bluegrass and Lonesome River Band before his three-decade association with Krauss. Tyminski’s first solo album was Carry Me Across the Mountain (2000), followed by the Grammy-nominated Wheels (2008), which was named Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. His work with Avicii inspired Tyminski to create 2017’s critically acclaimed, genre-defying Southern Gothic . Tyminski n again showcased his heart for bluegrass with a 2022 EP tribute to Tony Rice, One More Time Before You Go, and the following year brought the full-length God Fearing Heathen , which quickly topped Billboard ’s bluegrass chart. A prolific songwriter, Tyminski has penned lyrics alongside the likes of Monty Criswell, Phillip Lammonds, Kristian Bush, Ashley Monroe, Chris Stapleton, and many others. He has also recorded instrumental or vocal harmony on projects by Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Joan Osborne, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Rob Thomas, and Charlie Haden, earning four Male Vocalist of the Year honors from the IBMA over the course of his career, as well as 14 Grammy Awards. The Dan Tyminski Band is making its Ravinia debut, building on Tyminski’s three seasons at the festival as a member of Union Station.
