RAY CHEN Violinist and online personality Ray Chen re- defines what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century. With a global reach that enhances and inspires a new classical audience, he is regularly engaged by with the foremost orchestras and concert halls around the world. Beyond the performing arts, his work has also contributed to philanthropy, popular culture, and educational technology. Chen’s profile grew as the first-prize winner of the Yehudi Menuhin (2008) and Queen Elisabeth (2009) Competitions, growing an audience across Europe, Asia, the US, and his native Australia with both live and recorded performances. He signed with Decca Classics in 2017 following three acclaimed releases on Sony; his 2011 al- bum Virtuoso won an ECHO Klassik Award. Chen has since been recognized among Forbes ’s 30 most influential Asians under 30, appeared on Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle TV series, partnered with Giorgio Armani (who designed the cover of his Mozart album with Christoph Eschenbach), and performed at major media events like Bastille Day celebrations in France, the Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm, and the BBC Proms in London. He is also an ambassa- dor for Sony Electronics and a music consultant for Riot Games, and he released his own design of a violin case for the industry manufacturer GEWA. Recently Chen co-founded Tonic, an app startup that aims to motivate musicians and learners around the world to practice their craft together. In concert, highlights of recent seasons include appearances with the Lon- don Philharmonic, (US) National Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Munich Phil- harmonic, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra Nazionale della Santa Cecilia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, SWR Symphony, New York Phil- harmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Berlin Radio Symphony, and Bavar- ian Radio Chamber Orchestra. Born in Taiwan and raised in Australia, Chen was accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music at age 15, where he studied with Aaron Rosand. Ray Chen made his Ravinia debut in 2011 and returned to the festi- val for his Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut in 2017. He last appeared at Ravinia in 2018.
