Ravinia 2025 Issue 6

LINCOLN TRIO Borrowing the nickname of its home state, the Lincoln Trio was formed in 2003 and has per- formed across the United States, including at Le Poisson Rouge, Bargemusic, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. The trio has also performed on Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Series and Indianapolis’s Beethoven Chamber Music Series in addition to frequent appearanc- es on classical radio stations, including a live broadcast on WFMT of a world premiere in commemoration of the station’s 60th anniver- sary. A number of works have been written spe- cially for the Lincoln Trio, including tonight’s featured pieces by bandoneónist Daniel Binelli for the 2024 Latin Grammy–nominated album Fantasies of Buenos Aires , as well as Ravin- ia-commissioned works for the Lincoln Bicen- tennial; music by Clarice Assad, Juan-Antonio Cuellar, Janice Misurell-Mitchell, and Conrad Tao; and three works based on Korean themes commissioned by the Korean Sejong Cultural Society for the trio to premiere at the University of Chicago in 2013. This passion for new music inspired the Lincoln Trio’s debut album, Nota- ble Women , featuring works by Joan Tower, Lera Auerbach, Stacy Garrop, Augusta Read Thomas, Laura Elise Schwendinger, and Jennifer Higdon. The trio collaborated on the Grammy-nominat- ed Naxos chamber recording of James Whit- bourn’s Annelies and received their own nom- ination with 2016’s Trios from Our Homelands , featuring works by Arno Babajanian (reflecting Aznavoorian’s Armenian ancestry), Rebecca Clarke (Cunliffe’s English ancestry), and Frank Martin (Ruhstrat’s Swiss ancestry). Their re- cent albums highlight the work of 20th-centu- ry Chicagoans Leo Sowerby and Ernst Bacon ( Trios From the City of Big Shoulders , 2021) and contemporaries Garrop, Shawn Okpebholo, and Thomas, as well as Shulamit Ran and Mis- cha Kupko ( Trios from Contemporary Chicago , 2022). Following a residency at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Lincoln Trio was announced among the ju- rors for the Zemlinsky Prize for Composition at CCM, where they premiered and recorded the winning piece from the 2024 chamber music competition. The Lincoln Trio made its Ravinia debut in 2008 and marks its 16th season at the festival with this performance.
