Prior to their collaboration, Rodgers paired with lyricist Lorenz Hart to create dozens of musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication ( Pal Joey , On Your Toes , Babes In Arms , and more), while Hammerstein worked with several composers, bringing new life to operetta with Sigmund Romberg and Vincent Youmans, and crafting the groundbreaking clas- sic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma! , the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, revolu- tionized live theater, introducing an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” The team went on to create a string of hits, in- cluding the stage musicals Carousel , South Pa- cific , The King and I , and The Sound of Music , the film State Fair , and the record-breaking television special Cinderella . Rodgers & Ham- merstein’s musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards, and their work continues to thrive in theaters, concert halls, and cinemas around the world.
