GEORGPHILIPPTELEMANN (1681–1767) Fantasy No. for Solo Violin in E major, : Telemann was perhaps the most proli c com- poser of the Baroque era, writing in nearly every genre, including church cantata, concerto, sona- ta, and opera. As a result of his huge output and his modern compositional style, he was the most famous composer in Germany. Born in Magdeburg, Telemann received his early musi- cal training in violin, ute, keyboard instru- ments, and theory from local musicians. Formal studies in science, logic, and classics continued in Hildesheim, as Telemann prepared to enter Leipzig University to study jurisprudence. As fate would have it, his roommate at Leipzig University also was a musician. Telemann could no longer avoid exposing his musical interests. Soon his reputation as a composer grew, and he was able to secure an annual com- mission for church cantatas. In , Telemann founded the Collegium Musicum of Leipzig, which presented public concerts as well as per- formances at academic and municipal occa- sions. A er one year, he joined the court of Count Erdmann von Promnitz at Sorau (now Záry in Poland). Telemann became concert- master and later Kapellmeister of the court in Eisenach in . A more lucrative position opened four years later: music director of the city of Frankfurt, a post equivalent to Kantor in Leipzig (which Johann Sebastian Bach held – ). During his years in Frankfurt, Tele- mann composed an extraordinary number of church cantatas—over , in all. Instrumen- tal composition continued as he organized an innovative series of church concerts. Finally, Telemann was o ered the Kantor po- sition in Hamburg in . Responsibilities in- cluded preparation of service music at the ve local churches and supervision of the musical training at the grammar school, the Johanneum.
