He assumes the title of chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in September and, in the same season, begins his tenure as Zell Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. An exclusive Decca Classics artist, Mäkelä has released three albums with the Or- chestre de Paris, including Ballet Russes scores by Stravinsky and Debussy, as well as Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Ravel’s La valse . With the Oslo Philharmonic, he has recorded the complete Sibelius symphonies, Sibelius’s Vi- olin Concerto and Proko ev’s First with Janine Jansen, and Shostakovich’s Symphonies Nos. , , and . Mäkelä’s – season with the or- chestra began with Mahler’s Symphony No. and closed with Magnus Lindberg’s tour de force, Kra . Additional highlights includ- ed a January tour and residencies in Hamburg, Vienna, Paris, and Essen with performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. , Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen suite, and Tchaikovsky’s and Si- belius’s Violin Concertos with Lisa Batiashvili. Mäkelä’s h season with the Orchestre de Paris featured wide-ranging programs, from Beetho- ven’s Missa solemnis to Pascal Dusapin’s op- era-oratorio Antigone . With a continued focus on French repertoire and contemporary music, they also performed Bizet’s Symphony in C and Franck’s Symphony in D minor, as well as new works by Guillaume Connesson, Joan Tower, Anders Hillborg, Ellen Reid, and Sauli Zinov- jev. With the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mäkelä’s performances at the BBC Proms and Salzburg Festival were followed by an ex- tensive tour of South Korea and Japan, as well as a new annual residency at the Baden Baden Easter Festival. Mäkelä conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in four residencies at Sym- phony Center and led a US tour, including his rst appearance with the CSO at Carnegie Hall, performing Lemminkäinen and Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben . In the past year, he also guest-con- ducted the Berlin Philharmonic and performed as a cellist with members of the Orchestre de Paris and Concertgebouw Orchestra. is is Klaus Mäkelä’s Ravinia debut. Celebrating one of our region’s—and the world’s—most precious natural resources, Black Moon Trio collaborates with author Barb Rosenstock, illustrator Jamey Christoph, and the DuPage Children’s Museum to tell the story of the Great Lakes. Framing and accompanying Rosenstock’s and Christoph’s book, e Great Lakes: Our Freshwater Treasure , this program features music by living composers that delves into the science behind the formation of the Great Lakes and the crucial importance of freshwater for life and culture. Along the way, listeners will take a dramatic journey of a single drop of water as it travels in this enormous water system. Everyone is invited to re ect on the profound importance of this vital resource and the ongoing responsibility to protect the six-quadrillion gallons of water they hold. is special program brings to life the complex relationship between nature, human civilization, and the ecosystems that depend on these precious waters, o ering a deeper appreciation of the role these ve blue jewels play in sustaining life and culture.
