From there, Martin took o as a solo artist, releasing his self-titled debut studio album in and nding early success with Spanish-language hits such as “Fuego Contra Fuego,” “El Amor de Mi Vida,” and “María.” By the late s, he had also become one of the rst Latin artists to successfully cross into the En- glish-language pop market with global hits including “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” “She’s All I Ever Had,” “Shake Your Bon- Bon,” and later “She Bangs.” Looking back, Martin understands just how signi cant his musical contri- butions have been—not only for his own career, but for the countless artists who would follow. “It was a di erent time,” says Martin, who also enjoyed success with musical collaborations with artists such as Chris- tina Aguilera and Madonna. “ ere were fewer opportunities, and some- times people felt that singing in Spanish could limit your reach, so I o en had to record in both English and Spanish to have a shot at being known in America. Nevertheless, I always believed that our language and our culture were strengths, not obstacles.” In many ways, those strong beliefs became part of Martin’s legacy—allow- ing him to serve as a beacon of sorts for countless artists of varied backgrounds. “I’m proud that many of us helped open doors,” says Martin. “And now seeing so many artists celebrate who they are without having to apologize for it makes me very happy. at’s progress.” Because, no matter what, it should have always been about the music. “Seeing people singing, smiling, danc- ing and celebrating with me … that’s something I never take for granted,” says Martin. “Music has given me a beautiful way to connect with people, and that exchange still moves me deeply.” Nevertheless, the transition between the man who always seems to profes- sionally nd himself in the spotlight to the man that returns to his tour bus in the dark a er yet another encore still “ Seeing so many artists celebrate who they are without having to apologize for it makes me very happy. ” RAVINIAMAGAZINE • AUGUST 17 – AUGUST 23 , 2026 8
