Upon its initial release in , Trouble saw rave reviews from the BBC, which proclaimed it “a classic—lis- ten incessantly,” echoed by NPR with praise as, “timeless, cathartic and upli ing … a hit debut record.” Drowned in Sound named LaMontagne “an artist who you have never heard of but has the potential to change your life in a moment,” while Mojo raved, “LaMontagne is blessed with a wood-smoky Paul Rodgers-meets-Norah Jones delivery, oozing the rough-hewn sensitivi- ty of mid-’ s Marlboro ads and Kris Kristo er- son movies.” Trouble charted on the Billboard and was certi ed Platinum. LaMontagne has spent the past two decades carving a sin- gular space for himself in modern music. In a career that has seen over owing critical acclaim, he’s opted out of the spotlight and its accompa- nying celebrity in the remote hills of western Massachusetts. His distinctive voice, described by Rolling Stone as an “impeccably weathered tenor croon,” continues to serve as a conduit for era-de ning melodies and songwriting. Across nine studio albums, LaMontagne has let his songs and story speak for themselves, ringing a deep chord in the American subconscious. In addition to Trouble ’s Platinum certi cation, LaMontagne earned Gold records for both ’s Till the Sun Turns Black and ’s Gossip in the Grain . He received two Grammy nomina- tions and won the award for Best Contemporary Folk Album for ’s God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise . at same year, he began recording as Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs. His most recent album, Long Way Home , landed in —the lead single from the project, “Step Into Your Power” hit number one on the Bill- board Adult Alternative Airplay, Mediabase Tri- ple A, and Americana Singles charts, marking LaMontagne’s third number-one of his career. THEWEATHER STATION e Weather Station—the project of Toron- to-based songwriter Tamara Lindeman—turned out their seventh and perhaps most arresting album in January last year, Humanhood , reckon- ing with the unbound sense of not knowing how or what it is one is supposed to contribute to this fractious world, or if there’s even the energy or will to try. Since joining the Fat Possum Re- cords roster, e Weather Station added a pair of groundbreaking albums to their discography in the last few years: the career-de ning Igno- rance ( )—a deeply personal but widely res- onant re ection on climate change, or how we’ve learned to live alongside our own existential un- doing—and its ethereal, mostly live-recorded companion How Is It that I Should Look at the Stars ( ), comprising tracks written on the same themes as Ignorance but in a more hushed and nocturnal mood. In that time, e Weather Station has gone on to headline tours across North America and Europe, play major festivals, and perform on the televised Austin City Limits as well as Jimmy Kimmel Live . Ignorance was named Best New Music by Pitchfork and landed in year-end top- lists from e New Yorker (with a number-one ranking), Spin , New York Times , Uncut , e Guardian , and many others. As a writer, Lindeman is known for her detail: “Her writing can feel … like the collected epiphanies from a lifetime of observing” ( Pitchfork ). Over the course of e Weather Station’s six earlier albums, her music has moved from home-recorded, mostly acoustic folk—including ’s e Line , ’s All of It Was Mine , ’s Loyalty , and ’s self-titled album—to the “ornate act of world building” ( New Yorker ) that was Ignorance . e through- line, though, is a focus on ideas; her lyrics walk the line between the personal and the conceptual, forever tying small moments to larger metaphysical quandaries. Nominated for three Juno Awards, a Socan Songwriting Award, and shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, her albums have made a mark both critically and conceptually. e Weather Station is making their Ravinia debut.
