Its music director since is Riccardo Muti, one of the preeminent conductors of our time. e orchestra was founded in by its rst music director, eodore omas, and its other illustrious music directors include Frederick Stock, Désiré Defauw, Artur Rodziński, Rafael Kubelík, Fritz Reiner, Jean Martinon, Sir Georg Solti, and Daniel Barenboim. e renowned musicians of the CSO command a vast repertoire and annually perform more than concerts— most at Symphony Center in Chicago and, since , at Ravinia during the summer. e CSO also tours nationally and internationally. Since its rst tour to Canada in , the orchestra has performed in countries on ve continents during international tours. Since , recording has been signi cant in establishing the orchestra’s international reputation, with recordings by the CSO earning a total of Grammy Awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Its independent label, CSO Resound, was launched in . e release of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem , with the CSO and Chicago Symphony Chorus conducted by Muti, was recognized with two Grammy Awards.
