VLADIMIR FELTSMAN,

piano

Born in Russia in 1952, Vladimir Feltsman made

his piano performance debut at age 11 with the

Moscow Philharmonic. He furthered his piano

training under the guidance of Jacob Flier at

Moscow’s Tchaikovsky State Conservatory of

Music beginning in 1969, later studying con-

ducting at the Moscow and Leningrad Conser-

vatories. Feltsman won the grand prize at the

Marguerite Long International Piano Competi-

tion in Paris in 1971, launching a touring career

throughout the former Soviet Union, Europe,

and Japan. Over these years, he grew increas-

ingly discontented with the Soviet regime’s ar-

tistic censorship, and in 1979 Feltsman applied

for an exit visa. Eight years later, finally granted

permission to leave the Soviet Union, Feltsman

arrived in the United States to a warm welcome

at the White House, where he gave his first

North American recital. He also made his Car-

negie Hall debut that year, setting the stage for

decades of performance programs in New York.

Between 1992 and 1996 Feltsman presented the

major keyboard works by Bach at the 92nd

Street Y, and in 2003 he served as artistic direc-

tor and primary performer on the Lincoln Cen-

ter’s “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground”

series, a survey of piano and chamber works by

14 different contemporary Russian composers,

from Shostakovich to present-day figures. In

2006 Feltsman performed all of Mozart’s pi-

ano sonatas at the Mannes College of Music,

where he is on the piano faculty. He is also on

the faculty of the State University of New York

at New Paltz, where he founded the three-week

PianoSummer festival. Feltsman’s discography

includes eight albums of Bach’s works, many

of Beethoven’s sonatas, solo works by Liszt and

Mussorgsky, and concertos by Rachmaninoff

and Prokofiev, as well as solo works and con-

certos by Brahms, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky. He

recently completed recording complete cycles of

Schubert’s sonatas and Schumann’s solo works

for the Nimbus label. Vladimir Feltsman made

his Ravinia debut in 1988 and returns tonight for

his 15th season at the festival.
