Born in Victoria, British Columbia, David Fos-
ter began playing piano at age , setting him on
course to become the proli c songwriter, com-
poser, arranger, producer, and recording artist
he is today. He has described his life as having
three acts—in the rst is Foster the studio mu-
sician, arranger, and recording artist. His career
was launched when his pop group Skylark was
signed to Capitol Records in and scored
a top- hit with “Wild ower” in . In the
second act, Foster became one of the most suc-
cessful songwriters and record producers in his-
tory. He created hit songs and award-winning,
gold- and platinum-selling albums for a such
artists as Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whit-
ney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, An-
drea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Rod
Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire,
Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Seal,
Chaka Khan, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Chi-
cago, Hall & Oates, Brandy, ’N Sync, Boz Scaggs,
and Gloria Estefan. Foster was instrumental in
bringing classical-crossover singers like Bocelli
and Groban into the mainstream. He also creat-
ed culture-de ning soundtracks for blockbuster
lms like e Bodyguard, Urban Cowboy, and
St. Elmo’s Fire, as well as timeless holiday clas-
sics and perennial bestsellers such as Groban’s
Noel, Bublé’s Christmas, Dion’s ese Are Special
Times , Stewart’s Merry Christmas Baby, Bocelli’s
My Christmas, and Mary J. Blige’s AMary Christ-
mas. For this work, Foster has earned Gram-
my Awards, including three as Producer of the
Year, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe, as well as
three Best Original Song Oscar nominations. He
has also been honored with induction into the
CanadianWalk of Fame ( ), Canadian Music
Hall of Fame ( ), both the Canadian and US
Songwriters Halls of fame ( ), and the Hol-
lywood Walk of Fame ( ). Foster is presently
gearing up for a third act, on Broadway. He is
at work writing the music for productions based
on the iconic animated character Betty Boop
and the Amy Bloom novel Lucky Us, as well as a
one-man show based on the story of his career.
