, Mo-

zart received a summons from the Archbishop

of Salzburg to join the court in Vienna for the

coronation of Emperor Joseph II. In March,

Mozart arrived in Vienna and almost immedi-

ately found himself at odds with the archbishop.

When tensions escalated, he petitioned for his

release from employment. A er much deliber-

ation, Mozart was granted his request and, ac-

cording to his own report, was sent o “with a

kick on my arse.”

e rst year in Vienna brought many devel-

opments in Mozart’s life, both professional and

personal, that were cause for great optimism. He

received an adequate salary from teaching les-

sons to Viennese amateurs. Public and private

performances, with Mozart appearing as pianist

and violinist, were plentiful. He gave such

concerts during the month of March

July , and, a few weeks later, Mozart married
