Auditorium Theatre Sample Issue - page 14

Opening Night – December 9, 1889
The Auditorium opens its doors for the first public performance
and gala. Many considered it be the social event of the year.
Madame Adelina Patti, a famous Soprano of the late 19th
century, performed “Home Sweet Home” as patrons marveled
at the magnificent building dreamt into creation by Adler and
Sullivan. The Grand Opening of 1889 made the front page of the
two major newspapers of the time: The Chicago Daily News and
The Chicago Tribune. Even President Benjamin Harrison and
Vice President Levi P. Morton were in the house, having made
the long train ride to participate in the ceremonies.
“I am so anxious to see the Auditorium. I am
sure it is something magnificent. And the
acoustics are splendid, too, they tell me.”
– Adelina Patt
